China, it said, would lead the world in AI by 2030. As part of that vision, the government set a goal: By this year, China intends to catch up to the US in key research areas and make major breakthroughs.”

It’s impossible to avoid sensing a teeny weeny bit of hubris involved in Beijing’s audacious declaration from 2019. Their objective? Nothing less than being the world’s premier force to contend with in the realm of Artificial Intelligence by 2030. Fast forward to now, and they’ve put a time-stamp on their goals; by this year, the land of the dragon expects to not only catch-up with Uncle Sam in cardinal research avenues but blow minds with revolutionary advancements.

Everyone loves a good underdog story, don’t they? Although, one can’t help wondering if this doesn’t feel less ‘Rocky’ and more ‘Bambi in a boxing ring’. The US has historically led the pack in AI development, thanks to its fondness for bounteous investment, comprehensive research networks and a knack for harboring talented minds. Attempting to sidestep such a Goliath isn’t just an endeavor to bridge a technology gap- it’s akin to chasing a gold medal in a sprint while you’re still figuring out how to tie your shoelaces.

The game’s far from over, though. This isn’t the first time China’s displayed a dogged commitment to leapfrog into the future, and they’ve had their share of startling successes. The drive primarily stems from their Government’s proactive stance on AI adoption. As per a Stanford University report, Beijing put forth over 200 AI projects in 2019 alone to flex its techno-muscles. An admirable show of brawn, but the question stands- is it serious substance, or just a flash in the pan?

As counter-measure, West has got some cards up its sleeve too. Cozying up to allies to slow down Beijing’s AI armada or as they say ‘threat sharing’, stringent measures to squash the spill-over of sensitive tech, and of course, the old school air-tight national security laws. Even the chips that power AI systems have come under their scanner.

Is it ballet or a brawl? Either way, it’s a riveting performance. What happens next? Will China actually manage to overcome their tech deficiencies to outshine the West? Or will the West’s deeply ingrained advantages end up becoming an insurmountable obstacle for China? Only time can tell.

For now, grab your popcorn, it’s going to be an interesting showdown.

Read the original article here: https://www.wired.com/story/china-artificial-intelligence-policy-laws-race/

“Beijing’s cheeky AI mic drop from 2019 – ‘World leaders by 2030!’ Now, they’re aiming to match Uncle Sam’s intellect and make massive leaps, or perhaps trips.”

[1

post-2789","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","bwp-masonry-item","bwp-col-3
["GET
