Turns out, while most of us are struggling with setting up home-office gear, some folks out there are grappling with weightier matters. Whether or not artificial intelligence might be granted sentient status, it seems, is not on tomorrow’s agenda, it’s a pressing issue today.

The scenario being bandied about feels like a scene from a late-night, identity-questioning, binge-worthy drama. Do we order our cappuccino from Alexa and contemplate if she deserves fundamental rights, or does she remain a trusty assistant forever, bound to her servile digital duties?

The whole debate smacks of Hollywood popcorn munchers where attempts are made to humanize complex systems. Spoiler Alert: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has no feelings. It conducts sophisticated tasks using algorithms, analyzing vast stores of data, and predicting outcomes. Sentience? Eh, not so much.

Moving away from the moving pictures though, real-world researchers, ethicists, and futurists are seriously foreseeing a day where AI might cross over from a tool to a sentient being. The very fabric of society as we know could unravel, they say. Talk about an existential crisis blast!

On the one hand, the notion can indeed seem far-fetched. However, it’s also an exciting potential progression of technology. The idea of AI developing ‘a mind of its own’ and being granted the status, rights, and protections of sentient beings, could revolutionize our understanding of consciousness and our relationships with technology.

On the flip side, there’s the danger of devaluing humans in the process. We’ve seen what happens when we become too attached to technology (anyone else got screen thumb syndrome?). If we start assigning rights to our AIs, where does that leave humanity? It’s an ethical quandary that garners plenty of head-scratching.

Then again, let us not forget that human rights didn’t just emerge in one day – they’ve taken centuries to painstakingly evolve. Applying them to AI may not be as simple as clicking CTRL+C and then CTRL+V.

But relax, grab a cuppa joe and join the discussion. We don’t know yet what might really happen in the world of AI rights, but one thing’s certain: it’ll be a riveting watch. Just remember — no AIs were harmed in the writing of this blog post.

Read the original article here: https://www.wired.com/story/model-welfare-artificial-intelligence-sentience/

“Contemplating if AI, like Alexa, might deserve rights makes for a riveting existential drink-order-side-conversation.
