That’s right, in a first-of-its-kind experiment, Microsoft has submerged a data center off the coast of Scotland in an effort to improve efficiency and reduce cooling costs.”

Bold. Let’s give Microsoft a little round of applause for thinking out of the box—or should we say, under the water? Swimming against the tide of the classic brick-and-mortal data centers, Microsoft recently unveiled Project Natick. So, what’s hot about it—or rather, what’s cool? Picture this: a completely submerged data center lodged cozily at the bottom of the Scottish sea.

No doubt this jolts the mind with an array of absurd, yet intriguing queries: What happens if there is a leak? Will we have clams betting on server races? Is Microsoft kicking off a new trend – “Underwater Tech?” Well, it seems the tech giant is willing to deep dive into these questions in the name of efficiency and cost curbing, or perhaps, just to show off their buoyant innovative prowess.

To the uninitiated, data centers require the climatic dexterity of a polar bear. They need to keep cool, super cool. And it’s no secret that cooling these huge facilities without a ginormous electricity bill is no mean feat. Microsoft’s jaunt underwater is a tidal attempt to crack the chilling conundrum. The ocean, they say, is the new fan. And quite a cheap one too when it’s not busy charging us an arm and a leg for that seaside property we’ve been eyeing.

Next thing you know, the folks at Extropic will have an entire line of YouTubers vying for an ‘Underwater Rig’ tour – the 2022 version of MTV Cribs, perhaps? Meanwhile, the competition’s up on cloud nine, literally, betting on the cloud as the digital utopia. Microsoft, unimpressed, seems to be channeling Poseidon and making waves in the data center seascape.

Remember when they said technology could go places? Well, nobody guessed that the deepest trenches of the Atlantic might be on that itinerary. But here we are. It’s wet, it’s weird, but hey – if it works, it ain’t stupid. So while we sit back, pop some seaweed popcorn, and watch this underwater drama unfold, let’s spare a moment to tip our imaginary hats off to innovation. The tech world is one big wild ride, where it seems, the only constant is change; whether above ground, in the cloud, or under the sea.

Read the original article here: https://www.wired.com/story/extropic-aims-to-disrupt-the-data-center-bonanza/

Microsoft is making literal waves with its latest daring dive into data center design – the underwater “Project Natick”.
