Silicon Valley’s biggest companies held splashy events, rolled out new initiatives, and in some cases, made us all squirm in our seats.”

In the big show of this week’s Silicon Valley, the tech giants kicked off a series of flashy events and rolled out a slew of new initiatives. While some had a promising vibe around them, a few others left onlookers cringing in discomfort. One could say it was like watching a high-budget drama, filled to the brim with suspense and surprisingly, moments of comedic relief.

Take Nvidia for example. A company recognized for its name in the gaming industry held its GTC conference where everyone anticipated a grand display of AI and deep learning. And grand it was, or rather, grandiose. Introducing Maxine, Nvidia’s AI software, they shed light on how she reads lips, interprets sign language and whatnot. It’s a major stride in AI technology, sure, but also a reminder of the unsettling pace at which artificial is becoming a little too identical to intelligence.

Moving on to Tesla, which promises a greener future with each passing day. Yet, this week, it gave its fanbase a ‘disappointment sandwich.’ First, it updated all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the US with a fancy ‘Full Self-Driving’ (FSD) system, promising an advanced driver assistance tool. However, then the catch was revealed – the limitation of its capacity for suburban areas. The extravagant price tag on FSD comes with an asterisk, making people question its authenticity and the company’s intention behind it.

Not to be left behind, Meta – formerly known as Facebook – unveiled its Horizon Worlds, declaring that from now on, we’ll have our own avatar in the digital universe. As exciting as that sounds, it gives off a creepy sense of uncanniness. To immerse into virtual interactions sounds intriguing at first glance, until one questions the boundaries between the real and the virtual world. Is living a double life — one real, one digital — a futuristic convenience, or does it imply unfathomable consequences?

A week of baffling events in the tech industry is no surprise. As they say, Silicon Valley loves their theatrics. New initiatives unfurl, making us marvel at times, and leaving us baffled at others. The fuse between the real and the fantastical, the introduction of innovative technologies, and the extravagant promises — it all makes for an interesting spectacle. Yet, at the end of the day, one can’t help but wonder – where does the line between innovation and absurdity blur? Sometimes, the answers are as uncanny as the questions themselves.

Read the original article here: https://www.wired.com/story/uncanny-valley-podcast-nvidia-gtc-tesla-disappointed-fans-meta-horizon-worlds/

The tech giants rolled out initiatives this week, some promising yet with others we squirmed.
