It’s all in the pursuit of uncovering nuggets of useful intel, by now sifting through countless hours of surveillance footage.

In their somewhat misguided efforts to keep up with the digital Joneses – Silicon Valley to be specific – the Pentagon is courting AI. The efforts may resemble a bell-bottom-wearing dad trying to learn TikTok dances, but we can’t fault them for their drive. After all, artificial intelligence and machine learning are not just the ‘flavor of the month,’ they could herald the next paradigm shift in defence and warfare.

It’s an unquestionable fact that intelligence agencies have a love-hate relationship with omnipresent surveillance feeds. They offer a wealth of information, yet are a logistical nightmare. However, some tech god seems to have smiled upon them. An AI that can churn through almost a million videos and classify them according to content, talk about an upgrade from the previously grueling human-controlled method.

In a move that could be considered slightly more current than using fax machines, the Pentagon has taken the plunge into the AI realm. They’ve thrown aside their dusty old decoder rings and slide rules for the shiny new toy that is Project Maven.

Sorry James Bond, but the age of spooks with magnifying glasses pouring over surveillance tapes in shadowy rooms is fast drawing to a close. Now, they might just be reclining in their office chairs, sipping coffee and letting their new AI buddy do the grunt work.

Getting tech giants on board for this supremely ambitious project is however more challenging than pacifying a hornet’s nest. Yes, mavens of technology like Google have had their fingers in this particular pie, but that’s not to say it was all smooth sailing. Luring these tech gurus into the dramatic world of defense and warfare has had its fair share of ‘cloak and dagger’ moments.

To summarize the implementation of AI in the Pentagon’s intelligence operations, it’s been a wild, bumpy ride on the technology express. Yet the journey isn’t over; challenges continue to pop up like unsolicited software updates. Nevertheless, seeing how our friends at the Pentagon have embraced the future, it might just turn out to be a promising exercise. Stay tuned for the next big reveal; it’s no longer just in the realm of sci-fi scripts.

Read the original article here: https://www.wired.com/story/project-maven-katrina-manson-book-excerpt/

Melding the Pentagon’s antique practices with AI’s futuristic prowess is a recipe for hilarity – like a bell-bottomed dad learning TikTok dances.
