Together with machine learning colleagues at ADI, they have developed an approach that tracks the power consumption of specific combinations of neural-networks operations — such as multiplying matrices or adding vectors — that are the building blocks of AI computations.”

Well, isn’t this just swell. Lads in lab coats over at MIT have magically figured out a way to keep better tabs on the power consumption of all-you-can-eat AI buffet. According to their cheery little published study- an approach has been cracked open that monitors the energy consumed by different neural network activities. You know, the sort of stuff like multiplying matrices and adding vectors – the basic alphabet soup of AI workings.

Previously, the drill was to lump together every bit of consumption and call it a day. But not anymore. The clever clogs over at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have now thrown down the gauntlet with their new approach, which they’ve fondly christened as “energy-aware pruning.” It’s a delightful change of pace, mind you. This new tad dramatically cuts down the energy costs by tracking specific operations. All the while, promoting energy-saving without compromising on the system’s inferencing accuracy. What a time to be alive, wouldn’t you say?

Sounds like a treat for those drowning in the sea of AI power consumption, right? Well, you might be onto something. With this model-based approach, you get a free pass to witness where exactly power is being guzzled, erasing that whole ‘guilt by energy association’ thing we’ve all been stuck with.

Oh, and hold on, there’s more. These super sleuths have also managed to optimize the energy needs of neural networks during their training sessions. So these AI systems are now going to get trained, even when the kilowatt meter is running a marathon.

Cheerio to those days when you had to choose between energy costs and training your AI models, because the folks over at MIT are ready to put AI power consumption anxieties to rest. Now, it’s all about plugging some wires, making things efficient, energy-aware pruning, and voila! Efficient, energy-savvy AI is the new it-thing. Welcome to the future, folks!

Read the original article here: https://news.mit.edu/2026/faster-way-to-estimate-ai-power-consumption-0427

MIT’s clever clogs have hatched a nifty method to monitor the energy guzzling of AI’s matrix multiplication and vector adding, henceforth known as “energy-aware pruning”.
