More importantly, what can we do to ensure it develops in a way that benefits us all?” These are the burning questions posed in a recent discussion at MIT.

Feeling the intense pressure of these questions? Quick! Grab that half-empty, cold cup of coffee next to you and buckle up. We’re about to embark on a ponderous journey, gear-shifting into the future where artificial intelligence may take the driver’s seat.

Let us address the colossal elephant in the room: agentic AI – AIs that have cognitive abilities comparable to humans. The generals at MIT are busy firing debates about whether the god-like capabilities of AIs will become the messiah or the destroyer of mankind. Obsessed with the prospect of empowerment and omnipotence or haunted by the shadows of fear and destruction? Take your pick.

Remaining blissfully ignorant will please some, ideally, until disabling autonomy meets enabled autopilot. Agentic AI is on the radar, and let’s face it, it can’t be stopped. In this tech-crazed world, the potential for artificial intelligence to steer society is undeniably gripping, much like a cinematic thriller.

Mulling over digital versions of Aristotle’s ‘good life,’ MIT scholars have somehow found a philosophical bridge connecting ancient Greece and modern-day AI robots. Clever, isn’t it? Their thought-provoking debates ask us to ponder: Could and should agentic AI be designed to actively contribute to the ‘good life’ envisioned by Aristotle?

Right now, you’re probably thinking, “Why bother my silicon-based assistant about the good life?” It seems preposterous to expect Siri to intrude when you are about to order that sinfully delicious double chocolate fudge brownie with extra whipped cream. “Hold up! According to Aristotle, this is not beneficial for your wellness.” Can you imagine the upheaval!

Despite lofty Greek morality, the point here is to discuss the role of AI in shaping society. Can artificial intelligence be somehow programmed to protect us from self-inflicted follies, and more importantly, should it be? Can the elaborate rules etched into the digital cortex of Agentic AI eclipse the inherent human propensity for error?

These questions, plainly summarized by MIT, leave us enjoying a cliffhanger of sorts, a perceptible tension between the transformative potential and extreme uncertainty of agentic AI. The ball is in our court, humans. With fingers already touching the marker of the point of no return, the choices that we make now will forever echo in the ‘superintelligent’ chambers of future AI history. Fascinating, isn’t it? Don’t forget to feel that slight touch of existential dread while you’re at it!

Read the original article here: https://news.mit.edu/2026/agentic-ai-and-what-do-we-want-it-be-0630

In a world obsessed with AI, we’re debating if tech-empowered omnipotence or destruction lies ahead.
