\n“MIT Sloan Professor Firouz Michael Naderi, who led the institute’s recent briefing on Capitol Hill, said, ‘Rather than waiting for policymakers to stumble upon [our research], or providing it to them in formats that could take them hours to digest, we [at MIT] are actively seeking new ways to communicate our work.’ It’s high time that someone stood up and showed scientists and researchers that their jargon-filled scientific reports need a makeover.”<\/p>\n
Oh, the humanities! How can policymakers possibly understand the language of science? Why, it’s almost as if they speak another language entirely, one that doesn’t include terms like quark-gluon plasma or bionic pancreas. Isn’t it downright ridiculous that MIT has to devise new ways to communicate their work?<\/p>\n
Old way? Hours-long reading of papers most won’t understand. New way? Marathon briefings on Capitol Hill that last till everyone’s eyelids get heavy. It’s as though the researchers are finally realizing that, oh, dear, it’s not enough to just do the research. Shocking, isn’t it?<\/p>\n
Despite being armed with innumerable data and studies worth millions of dollars, it takes only one glance at these complicated, technical, vastly unreadable documents to grasp the essence of the situation. It’s like throwing a party and realizing no one understands the invite. Devastating, you might say.<\/p>\n
So, MIT researchers are now engaging in a monumental task to break down the technological and scientific walls preventing policymakers from understanding the scope and implications of their studies. They’re aiming to create, as Naderi brilliantly points out, ‘consumer-friendly research portfolios.’<\/p>\n
In essence, the scientific community is finally realizing that producing comprehensive research isn’t where the job ends. In order to have real impact and for these studies to influence policy decisions, the results must be understandable and accessible to those who are not experts in the field. In other words, unless policymakers can comprehend the scientific language used, the findings are, for all intents and purposes, rendered useless.<\/p>\n
Isn’t the realization a bit, shall we say, late in coming? You could say MIT is bridging the language gap between policymakers and academics, or you could say they’re just opening their eyes to a reality most people have been living with for ages. But hey, at least it’s a step in the right direction.
