Spicing Up Your Style: Fun Ways to Repurpose Your Out-of-Commission Humane AI Pin!
“What to Do With Your Defunct Humane Ai Pin”
“The subtext of this badge isn’t just that the wearer is aware that AI has the potential to destroy the world as we know it; it’s also that they’re doing something about it.”
Apparently, the concept of a ‘humane AI’ pin has been introduced and become the equivalent of a ‘woke’ symbol among the technologically advanced. Naturally, all those seen sporting this pin are not just aware of the potential dystopian future that AI brings, but they are assumed to be actively working to prevent it. Because nothing screams, “I’m saving the world” like a subtle fashion statement…
The trend of these pins continues to grow, despite the fact that ‘humane AI’ is a phrase as nebulous as a foggy London morning. There’s no universally agreed-upon recipe for what makes AI ‘humane’. In its basic definition, ‘humane’ means ‘inflicting the minimum of pain.’ To use this term in the context of artificial intelligence could imply a myriad of things — from friendly robot butlers adept at making the perfect cup of tea, to a complete domination by machines that is somehow more ‘humane’ than being ruled by humans.
Unclear meanings and vague connotations aside, the skeptics among us might question what these pin-wearing tech revolutionaries are really doing to ensure the ‘humane’ aspect of AI. Are they rigorously scrutinising each line of code they produce? Or perhaps they’re working tirelessly to implement ethical standards in algorithms? Or maybe, just maybe, the pins are just pretty and shiny…
In reality, the problem is many of the people wearing these pins simply do not comprehend the gravity of the issue at hand. Sure, the pins are a great conversation starter at those stuffy tech conferences, but being ‘aware’ that AI can potentially lead to a dystopian future is massively different from actively taking steps to prevent it.
Perhaps it’s high time this ‘humane AI’ movement moves beyond the symbolic gesture of wearing a pin, and takes more proactive steps. Instead of symbolic gestures and buzzwords, tangible action is needed. It’s time the AI industry stops patting itself on the back for token gestures and dives deep into the nitty-gritty of the ethical dilemmas this new world of AI presents. In other words, it’s time to put those pious pins to work … in real programming.
