Artificial Intelligence Composing My Narratives? Only When Pigs Fly!

“AI Drafting My Stories? Over My Dead Body”

“AI can generate disgustingly good prose. So then, what’s the matter with letting AI do all the writing?” – a question that stokes curiosity like a flame in a forest. To say that AI’s foray into writing is impressive would be an understatement. Rendered utterly awe-struck, we squeal with the joyful naïveté of a child at a magic show, oblivious to the can of worms we’re cracking open.

The maestros of artificial intelligence have armed themselves with a battalion of algorithms, models, and tools like GPT-3 that can astoundingly mimic human-like writing. Yes, the kind that may have you momentarily fooled if you were casually glancing over. Sorcery, some may say. Disturbingly brilliant, it is undeniable. But, on a long enough timeline, one has to ask, is surrendering the pen to automated bots really the best decision?

On the surface, it seems a perfect solution, labor-saving like a washing machine but for words. Machines that churn out prose as quickly as one fries an egg. But, wrestling with language nuances, crafting vivid imagery, and instilling raw emotions in lifeless words is an art. And while computer programs might be splendid at color-by-numbers, don’t forget it’s still humans who paint the Sistine Chapels of literature.

Oh, and the inevitable question arises, what about errors? What if the AI makes an unthinkable faux pas, or worse, shares an incorrect piece of information? “Oops, my bad,” might work for humans, but an AI system tumbling down the rabbit hole of inaccuracies is a risky business, all without the faintest blush of embarrassment.

Another worrisome facet is authenticity. Genuine human emotions are the invisible threads that bind readers to words. The empathy, the anger, the joy – they are perceived in the language, in the syntax, and anyone who has ever been moved by a passage knows that. Can an AI, who has not lived, laughed, or loved, encapsulate and portray such complex emotions? Or will it just echo the sentiment of the last bestseller it was fed?

In sheer defiance of the Status Quo, AI writing may appear extraordinarily convenient, a truly modern miracle. And yet, it’s a slippery slope. As the world tinkers with the idea of AI-written novels, blogs, and whatnot, it’s essential to remember the charm of human imperfection in writing. Are we ready to exchange this for shiny, efficient but ultimately soulless prose produced by algorithms? Only time will tell. For now, perhaps it’s safe to say, there’s no harm in keeping ink in our pens.
