Hidden in a typical array of beiges, medical practitioners can leave no stone unturned…or shall we say, no polyp unnoticed. And lo and behold, our omnipresent AI has swooped in to save the day. Apparently, a group of researchers decided to see if AI could spot tiny, sneaky polyps during colonoscopies better than the human eye. Guess what? Turns out, when you get AI to play ‘Where’s Waldo’ with polyps, it does 20% better than us mere mortals. Cue the gasps and fainting from shock.
In any case, this impressive upgrade in polyp detection has been aptly put to the test in China. Apparently, they have a tad bit of affection for avant-garde technology out there. What’s quite interesting is that these polyps, harmless as they may appear, make the perfect host for our uninvited guest, colorectal cancer. But this means early detection could (and most likely, would) lead to timely treatment. And yes, in case the mathematical complexity throws you off, early treatment does generally equal better prognosis.
But alas! Before we start envisioning an AI revolution with robots performing all the colonoscopies (how futuristic!), there might be a hitch. You see, a colonoscopy isn’t exactly an easy Sunday stroll in the park for most people. So, our ever so gracious AI has given us a trade-off. It’s great at spotting small polyps that even trained experts might miss, but this also means that patients, err…participants have to endure a longer procedure. But hey, who’s going to quibble over a few minutes when you’re talking about catching cancer early, right?
So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen, the future of colonoscopies. The time when we can sink in a slumber, wake up and let AI handle the task of finding nasty little polyps.
