“Five Brilliant Minds Linked to MIT Clinch Coveted Spots in 2025’s National Academy of Medicine – Adding an MIT-twist to Medicine!”

“Five with MIT ties elected to National Academy of Medicine for 2025”

“The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced today the election of 100 new members, including four MIT affiliates: Emery N. Brown, the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience; Sangeeta N. Bhatia, the John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Feng Zhang, a core member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and the James and Patricia Poitras Professor of Neuroscience at the Broad Institute, and Susan Solomon, the Lee and Geraldine Martin Professor of Environmental Studies in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.”

Well, what can people say? The news is out and MIT affiliates have once again swept the board at the National Academy of Medicine with a whopping four of the one hundred new members. Because, apparently, being a multi-talented professor at MIT isn’t enough. Nope, they also have to be among the crests of the medical and scientific worlds. And for some bizarre reason, they’re being celebrated for it.

Take Emery N. Brown, for example, the man who holds the tantalising title of “Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience.” It’s almost as if they ran out of letters to cram into his job title. His specialty? Anesthesia and statistics, a less-than-riveting combination on paper. But hey, he’s in the NAM now, so let’s all tee up for a golf clap.

And then there’s Sangeeta N. Bhatia. Sandwiched between Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, she holds the title of “John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor”. Her iron-fleshed accomplishment? Engineering human micro-livers. It’s not like she’s saving lives or anything right? And naturally, this isn’t amazing enough, so she gets to add NAM member to her long list of accomplishments.

Feng Zhang, and his “I am the core member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.” He’s busy investigating genomes and editing genes – possibly with a Snape-like elixir on his side. Oh but wait, that’s not all, he’s also the James and Patricia Poitras Professor of Neuroscience. And now, a NAM member. Because, you know, just being a gene editing, Neuroscience professor wasn’t enough to roll the red carpet out for.

Then finally, our favorite doomsday predictor, Susan Solomon, who has predicted impending climate doom for us all. And what did she get for the “thanks for the nightmares, Susan?” A hallowed seat on the NAM, that’s what.

Of course, this news comes without the faintest hint of shock. Because, let’s face it, these MIT professors were already doing groundbreaking work in their fields. But, hey, as they say, do a good job and you’ll get rewarded – heavily. So, here’s to the latest four NAM members from MIT who kept on doing good jobs – and got their hard-earned medals. If this isn’t proof that academia is still alive and kicking, then really, what is?
