Meta Promises to Banish AI-Crafted Fakes – Lets a Bunch Slip Under the Radar, Though!

“Meta Will Crack Down on AI-Generated Fakes—but Leave Plenty Undetected”

“Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, wants you to know it’s working to protect you from the scourge of… synthesized media, a euphemism for AI-generated fakes like deepfakes or ‘cheapfakes’ that use less sophisticated manipulation techniques.”

Appreciate the heads up Meta, indeed, which has recently undergone a makeover from its former identity, Facebook. Now it’s striving to be the guardian against the menacing ‘synthesized media’ or as we affectionately know them, deepfakes and ‘cheapfakes’. Kudos to it for coming to our ‘rescue’.

Because, why wouldn’t they show concern? After all, it’s only natural for the company that anticipates the future of our digital lives – the Metaverse – to feel sympathetic towards us helpless beings who stand at the mercy of manipulated media. Oh, how thoughtful of them to combat these AI-generated fakes.

According to the company, new rules are being implemented on its platforms, where it will “take stronger action against people who repeatedly share misinformation”. Admirable, really. It raises the question, though: what took them so long? Perhaps they were too occupied with redesigning their logo and changing their name? Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, they must’ve been too busy single-handedly planning the trajectory of the future of internet.

It must be noted, however, that these new rules are apparently not applicable to satirical content or content meant to raise awareness about these manipulated media. Put simply, if it’s meant for laughs or enlightenment, it’s safe. There’s nothing like a little evasion to make every legislation feel like home!

Lastly, Meta aims to invest around $50 million to “understand and address the societal impact of AI and Responsible AI innovation”. Seems like a solid holiday rebranding investment. Who doesn’t love a tech giant that dishes out millions just for the sake of our societal well-being?

To sum up, Meta’s brightness is indeed blinding, striving to protect us from the perils of synthetic media while planning our future in the Metaverse. Though it’s an alarming thought to think of deepfakes and cheapfakes becoming commonplace, it’s indeed comforting that Meta is there – always watching, always protecting. What a relief.
